Making simple and tasty 1 hr pickles before dinner

Saturday, September 4, 2010

My dad has the most extensive selection of peelers, shredders, mandolins, zesters which he buys constantly at food equipment demos. Ironically, he has never used them with the exception of the peeler for fruit and proclaims that there is a special "technique" involved. So as a family bonding activity, sister not included, I enlisted a peeling-shredding-slicing session using the tools amassed and the abundance of carrot and cucumbers sitting in my family kitchen. I got some distilled white vinegar and generously sweetened it to taste as my stock liquid. Just cover the veggies with the sugared vinegar in the fridge for at least an hour and serve. They also keep indefinitely and remain sweet and crunchy as an accompaniment for whatever. Enjoy!

Dad assembling the pickle jar
Mum gathering thin cross-sections of carrot and packing them into tight rosettes.

Building and packing and layering veggies of different cuts and shapes.

As an afterthought, I threw some goji berries in for more color.

Breakfast for Dinner at Wild Honey Singapore

Friday, September 3, 2010

Wild Honey
333A Orchard Road
#03-02 Mandarin Gallery Singapore
6235 3900

Food (3.6/5.0)- SGD 120 ++ for 3 breakfasts (comprising mostly of eggs and bread) and 3 drinks (2 alcoholic and 1 iced coffee). I've paid this much for brunch in NYC but with the abundance of amazing, cheap and satisfying breakfast options in food haven Singapore, eating at Wild Honey is hardly worth it considering that the dishes are  very reproducible at home.

Service (3.4/5.0)-
annoying and ill-trained server. I wanted to assemble my Bellini myself and dismissed the server but she was hovering around me and proceeded to give out instructions as I poured 3 shots into a flute. I opted not to put the sugar cube because of too much sweetness and she proceeded to tell me that it's standard procedure and popped it in without my approval?! wtf. The same person also kept coming by to ask if we were done with food. In fact before I took my final forkful of food, she swooped in and removed my plate! Talk about RUDE and unprofessional.

The male host was friendly and I might be out of it, but there were giggly girls/OL's on the adjacent table and they were clamoring for pictures with him. Other tables also presented with him sitting down and chatting with other googly-eyed female patrons as rounds were made.

Cousin Samantha raved about it and took Yx and I out for dinner. Considering I reside mostly in the land of diners and brunches, I will hereby admit that the bar is set a little higher than most. Breakfast for dinner is by no means a novel concept, but Wild Honey serves breakfast food from different parts of the world in extensive variety. What we had were good, but I'll settle for IHOP or any other greasy spoon diner over Wild Honey anytime. Arrgh! Banh Mi (Vietnamese sandwiches only cost USD 3-6 typically!!!!)

Deconstructed Bellini-Chilled glass's the way to go. Too sweet for my liking (see above).

Some signature sunrise cocktail garnished with chamomile. Not bad.

Vietnamese Pork Sandwich - Pulled roasted shoulder of pork, vietnamese prosciutto and pork sausage with marinated vegetables on toasted ciabatta. The sandwich was good and I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised by thin slices of Singaporean Bak-kwa (sweet pork jerky) tucked into the sandwich (not mentioned on the menu).

English - The classic full breakfast; creamy scrambled eggs, pork sausage, sauteed mushrooms, dad's baked beans, bacon and vine ripened tomato with toasted brioche-No complaints there. Loved the toasted brioche.
Belgian - Thick fluffy waffles served with coconut cream, grilled mango, blueberries and toasted coconut. Unexpected but winning flavor profile and crunchy texture coming from toasted coconut. Very nice. Waffles were fluffy.
